Neighborhood
Walcha was the first area to be discovered in the New England region. It was on the route taken by the explorer John Oxley and reached on 8th September, 1818. He named the Apsley River after the Secretary of State for the colonies, Lord Apsley. Surrounded by spectacular national parks threaded with wild rivers and tumbling waterfalls, Walcha is renowned for its natural beauty. The oldest colonial settlement in the New England region, the small town also has a rich history, vibrant arts community, and plenty of country charm. On the doorstep: Oxley Wild Rivers National Park with Apsley and Tia Falls, sweeping granite gorges, and the Walcha MTB Trails’ pine-forest singletrack—plus quiet country roads and famed gravel loops rolling straight from town. From sunrise rides to waterfall walks, Red Hill is your New England High Country basecamp.
